Penelitian dalam berbagai pendekatan selalu diperdebatkan sepanjang waktu, di mana tolak ukur yang digunakan untuk tiap-tiap paradigma selalu menjadi perhatian utama para peneliti. Perdebatakan muncul karena perbedaan cara pandang sebuah sistem kehidupan. Dilema penelitian kualitatif dan kuantitatif, sebenarnya terpusat kepada masalah apakah ada hubungan antara paradigma penelitian dan tipe metodologi kedua jenis penelitian tersebut.

Jika penelitian kuantitati biasanya lebih menekankan kepada cara pikir yang lebih positivistik yang bertitik tolak dari fakta sosial yang ditarik dari realitas objektif, di sampping asumsi teoritis lainnya, maka penelitian kualitatif bertitik tolak dari paradigma fenomenologis yang objektivitasnya dibangun atas rumusan tentang situasi tertentu sebagaimana yang dihayati oleh individu tau kelompok sosial terbaru dan relevan tengan tujuan dari penelitian itu. Berbeda dari penelitian kuantitatif, tujuan penelitian kualitatif tidak selalu mencari sebab-akibat sesuatu, tetapi lebih berupaya memahami situasi tertentu. Penelitian kualitatif dapat memberikan banyak pilihan cara untuk melihat, menafsitkan, dan memaknai satu fenomena yang sesungguhnya terjadi di lingkungan sekitar manusia.
